Early Works of Andres Serrano

Andres Serrano is a photographer who gained notoriety in the mid '80s for sparking the big National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) hoopla - shortly followed by Robert Mapplethorpe's photos. Conservatives were incensed that their hard-earned money was being taxed to contribute to works they did not believe to be art.

Mr. Serrano's most controversial piece was a close-up photograph of a crucifix in a jar of urine, known as "Piss Christ." (Offense aside, I think it is a beautiful image.)

In the summer of 1999, Mr. Serrano ordered the tee-shirt version of this drawing from my Web site. I was greatly honored, as well as pleased, to find out that he has a sense of humor.
